Featured tip
Create a photo screen saver
You can create a custom screen-saver slideshow from a folder of your photos. Here's how:

1. Right-click the desktop and click Properties.
2. Click the Screen Saver tab and select My Pictures Slideshow on the Screen Saver list.
3. Click Settings, click Browse to select the location of your pictures folder, and then click OK.

Change the details shown in Windows Explorer
The Details view is probably the best view for Windows Explorer and gives you specific information about a file. By default, the Details view shows a file's name, size, type, and the date modified. But you can also choose to show many other details of a file.

1. In the Details view in Windows Explorer, right-click a column heading.
2. Click an available detail that you want to display.

The new details column automatically appends to the end of the existing columns.

Make a folder private
There is a way to keep people who use your PC from viewing your files: You can make every folder under My Documents private--meaning only you can access these folders and their contents. Anyone else is denied access. To make your My Documents folder private:

1. Right-click My Documents and then click Properties.
2. Click the Sharing tab and select the Do Not Share This Folder checkbox.
3. Click OK.

Now all your folders and files are private. If you don't need this much privacy, you don't have to protect everything. You can simply follow the steps above to make individual folders private instead.

IHateSpam

Filter those irritating, unsolicited e-mail messages from your in-box. IHateSpam runs quietly in the background to compare your incoming e-mail against a current list of known spammers; if one matches, you're notified with a pop-up window that the mail is "quarantined." The utility runs inside Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, so you avoid the hassle of running a separate program. IHateSpam will automatically update itself to ensure that you're protected against the latest spammers.

SpamCatcher

Blacklist spam with this utility. SpamCatcher tracks e-mail on its own server, taking note of which bulk messages users are rejecting. Then, for each e-mail you receive, it determines which e-mail is likely to be spam and sends users a probability score on how likely it is to be spam. You can also use the software to create your own rules to identify and blacklist spam. Every time you fetch new e-mail, SpamCatcher automatically checks for new rules and updates itself. Hundreds of rules are applied to compute a spam probability score and catch new spam. Works with Microsoft Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, and XP; Eudora, Netscape, Messenger, IE 5.0, and other POP3 e-mail clients.
